Sebastian Maas investigates contrast both as an inner experience and as a formal principle. His visual worlds resist any premature reading, they make the act of looking itself their subject. Figures, objects and viewers enter a reciprocal relation in which identity, gender, desire and vanitas are renegotiated. His practice thus opens a sensuous field of thought, placing inherited systems of classification under pressure.
