With “M for mood,” Franziska Nast creates a comprehensive tableau of existential and non-existential states, interweaving autobiographical, feminist, art historical, and pop culture references in various media. She translates these into contradictory materials such as skin, rice paper, metal, or asphalt by drawing on, tattooing, perforating, or sandblasting their surfaces. The narrative layers of the image and text fragments enter into a dialogue with the personal and social meanings of both found and manufactured objects. At the edges of hi-fi and lo-fi aesthetics, fashion, design, visual and tattoo art, a semantic complexity of material and emotional composition unfolds. Simultaneously, Nast opens up a complex examination of memory, care work, and emotion that reveals ruptures and overlaps in the multiple roles as an artist, founder of the fashion label “Fack Fushion,” tattoo artist, book designer, mother, and co-founder of the St. Pauli Kunstverein.
