Auenland, 2024 — Credits: Berthold Reiß, 2024

Auenland does not stand for a theme, a content or an object of painting. J. R. R. Tolkien’s answer to the question of what the Ring means in the end is that the Ring dissolves in the end. Only as a threat does a world without heaven or a vicious circle appear. Even Gandalf does not see himself in a position to step out of it: But what could open the way to my heart for the Ring is pity, pity for the weak and the desire for the power to do good. Only those who live in the Auenland are capable of resistance. According to Immanuel Kant, this ability arises from the fact that a small country always has many borders and is generally more interested in knowing and maintaining its possessions than in blindly pursuing conquests. The Auenland exhibition is dedicated to this care. Painting does not present itself as a world, but as a sphere, which Kant also calls the field of experience.
