In 1974, the Frankfurter Kunstverein held the first exhibition on Nazi art after 1945, “Art in the 3rd Reich. Documents of Subjugation”, the first exhibition on Nazi art after 1945 took place at the Frankfurter Kunstverein. It was the first critical examination of Nazi art and can be seen as a prototype for politically committed exhibition practice in the 1970s. 50 years later, we are once again looking at this exhibition and the art and contemporary historical contexts and controversies that were as virulent then as they are now. To this end, we are working with Paula Gehrmann, whose artistic practice combines exhibition architecture with mediation concepts. Within this framework, Nazi art is to be presented as an object of the Federal Republic’s culture of remembrance and at the same time the significance it has within contemporary research and exhibition practice is to be shown.
