Witalij Frese foregrounds the human body as a dynamic, myth‑inflected unity under constant exploration. His black‑and‑white ceramics oscillate between vulnerability and unsparing directness. Focusing on individual body parts, he deconstructs and reconfigures the body to render varied emotional states. Explicit and hybrid figurations draw on ancient Greek and Roman ceramics, merging sculptural and decorative elements that combine female and male attributes. Hairless figures, detached from reality, move between genderlessness and hybridity, interacting or lingering in solitude. His turn to ancient vessel forms activates the iconography and symbolism of antiquity and links mythological motifs to personal questions of embodiment. Thus the body’s layered historical significance comes to the fore, shaped by cultural, political and religious discourses.
