The artist residency program “Democratic Encounters: Harare & Munich” marks the 30th anniversary of the Munich–Harare sister cities partnership. Such diplomatic alliances promote cultural exchange and collaboration, strengthening civic, social, and cultural ties beyond the politics of borders. Co-curated by Lothringer 13 Halle (Munich) and First Floor Gallery (Harare), in cooperation with the City of Munich’s Department of Arts and Culture, “Democratic Encounters” will be hosted by Artist-in-Residence Munich. Three artists from Harare will stay at the Ebenböckhaus atelier from April to June 2026, exploring encounters—between artists, cultures, histories, and societies—as a particular mode of facing democracy not only as a political system but also as a participatory practice: one that unfolds through artistic engagement.
