In 1974, the Frankfurter Kunstverein hosted the first post-1945 exhibition on Nazi art, entitled “Art of the Third Reich: Documents of Oppression”. The exhibition was the first to critically examine National Socialist art, and it can be considered a prototype for the politically engaged exhibition practices of the 1970s. Fifty years later, we are revisiting the exhibition, as well as the art-historical and contemporary contexts and controversies that were as prevalent then as they are now. To this end, we are collaborating with Paula Gehrmann, whose artistic practice combines exhibition architecture with educational concepts.
Within this framework, NS art will be presented as an object of West German memory culture, while also demonstrating its significance within contemporary research and exhibition practice.
