The exhibition showcases the work of Auguste Herbin, an important figure in modern art and a co-founder of abstraction in France, featuring approximately 50 works and extensive documentation.
Herbin began with late Impressionist landscapes and still lifes before developing a Fauvist and Cubist style. In 1904, he met art critic Wilhelm Uhde, which strengthened his presence in Germany.
In the 1930s, he turned to abstract art and designed camouflage patterns during World War I. As president of the Abstraction-Création group, he advocated for abstract art and developed his “alphabet plastique” in 1942, a system for colors and geometric forms.
After 1945, Herbin became a role model for concrete and kinetic art and remained a renewer of French abstraction until his death.
