Mercedes Azpilicueta’s exhibition at Instituto Cervantes Munich, curated by Florencia Malbrán, revisits Anna Mary Howitt’s proto-feminist memoir “An Art-student in Munich”. Drawing inspiration from Howitt’s mystical, abstract drawings – precursors to modern abstraction – and her struggles in a male-dominated art world, Azpilicueta creates performative and sculptural installations that blend traditional craft with modern techniques. The exhibition amplifies the overlooked contributions of women artists, linking Howitt’s radical visions to contemporary feminist dialogues. The exhibition will be opened with an artist talk between Mercedes Azpilicueta and Florencia Malbrán on March 20th at 7pm.
