JO VAN DE LOO presents “Future Past Now”, a new series of works by Jan Paul Evers. The exhibition negotiates the fragility of contemporary interpretations of the world against the backdrop of a political present in which scientific knowledge and magical thinking are increasingly intertwined. What do we expect from the future? How does the past shape us? And what does this mean for the present? Evers works with the technique of analogue black and white photography, which in his works goes far beyond the documentary. The works on display take the twelve signs of the zodiac as visual starting points visual starting points without losing themselves in unambiguity. They open up a space in which historical patterns of interpretation and contemporary discourses on knowledge, belief and reality overlap. “Future Past Now” poses the question of the constitution of reality in a time in which old narratives persist and old narratives persist and intertwine with the promises and uncertainties of the present. Evers’ pictures are not depictions – they are settings that sharpen perception in order to visualise constructions of time and meaning visible.
