The artist Ilit Azoulay is a master of photographic storytelling. Not content with the two-dimensional image, she creates works with a physical presence in space that have an impact that is as sensual as it is intellectual. Her approach initially resembles an archaeological excavation. She works her way through different layers of time and searches for fragments. Places and artefacts are dissected, the artist selects details with the help of macro shots, she changes the context and weaves traces from the present and past into fascinating collages.
Ilit Azoulay meticulously collects her finds and creates an archive for each project. She weaves her material like a carpet that creates new connections, but also new liabilities.
For the interim quarters of the Museum Villa Stuck, Azoulay accepts the invitation to respond to the history of the new and old location with an art project specially developed for this purpose.
