As a profesional Colombian woman artist, Johanna Calle (Bogotá, 1965) has focused her art practice on experimental drawing and photography for the past decades. She lives and works in Bogotá, D. C. Colombia, South America. Married to Julio César Pérez Navarrete, with whom she shares and enjoyes making discoveries and research projects. Johanna Calle deals with the themes of land, property, and societal norms in her works. The depicted trees are created on pages of land registry registers that are blank and unwritten. The special technique consists of Calle filling the pages of these empty land registry registers with typed laws relating to the recognition and compensation of victims of armed conflicts and human rights violations in Colombia. By transcribing the law onto the blank pages of the land registry registers, Calle creates metaphorical trees symbolizing the land. In her typewriter works, she addresses important social and political issues while simultaneously transporting us into a world of textuality where the boundaries between reading and viewing blur.
