Print-on-demand has revolutionised the world of books: since the beginning of the millennium, ever better and cheaper digital printing processes have met the possibilities of global online trade. The result is a production method in which books are no longer reproduced in stock. They are only printed when there is a specific need: “on demand”.
The “Library of Artistic Print on Demand” maps this experimental field for the first time with 244 titles. It explores its global distribution, historical depth and political relevance. All publications are comprehensively documented and accessible in a web archive. Since 2024, all of these books have been preserved in physical form by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Artists’ Book Collection) and can be viewed in the reading room there. Annette Gilbert curated the selection of the more than 110 books collected and accessible here.
