The visual effect of Zimmermann’s current works emerges from layered transfer prints on screen-printed gauze, combined with painting and a mix of personal and found photographs, which are superimposed like translucent layers. The textile element, already inherent in traditional canvas painting, is taken up by a thin frame support with a fabric edge. The permeability of the material makes the lower layers visible. Strategic cuts and cut-outs integrate printed fabric fragments into the pictorial structure in the manner of a “shaped canvas.” This technique brings out lower layers on the one hand and creates new reference systems on the other, reminiscent of photo collages.
However, these extensions of lines, surfaces, body parts, or traces of color do not serve a uniform pictorial theme but maintain the independent organization of each individual layer, creating moments of irritation and surprise—leaving room for discovery within the composition.
