Stanislav KolĂbal, born in 1925, developed a sculptural and graphic oeuvre from the early 1950s onwards which, in its reduction to simple structures and materials, occupies a strong conceptual position within the art movements of Minimal Art and Arte Povera.
As one of the few artists from communist-ruled countries, KolĂbal has also been exhibited and collected in important Western museums, such as the Centre Pompidou and MusĂ©e d’Art Moderne de Paris; Guggenheim and Metropolitan Museum, New York; Ludwig Museum, Vienna and Budapest; Tate Gallery, London.
From 1990 to 1993, he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. In 2019, he designed the Czech and Slovak pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale.
We have been working closely with Stanislav KolĂbal since our gallery opened in 1977. The current exhibition features 30 watercolors from recent years, along with two wood reliefs by the artist, who is now 100 years old.
