Teresa Kutala Firmino is a multimedia artist, based in Johannesburg, working with paint, photography and performance.
In the works shown in this exhibition she follows the economy of intimacy in a partriarchal society and the resulting consequences. Firmino explores different methods such as love potions that helped women to gain economic power, exert agency and control over their lives and relationships. She uses the aesthetics of packaged sugar, 1950s-1960s contraceptive posters and commercialized love potions to create her paintings.
