“Metamorphoses – Young Brazilian Art” Beatrice Arraes, Arrudas, Gustavo Diógenes, Caio Marcolini
Four artists, one movement: featuring Beatrice Arraes, Arrudas, Gustavo Diógenes and Caio Marcolini, the exhibition brings together four voices from the young Brazilian art scene in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza, whose works are dedicated to transformation – of form, material and meaning. Beatrice Arraes, who has recently attracted international attention with her highly acclaimed US debut exhibition in Los Angeles and current shows in New York, translates the landscapes of her north-eastern Brazilian homeland into magical-realist visual worlds that lie somewhere between memory and inner topography in her oil paintings. Gustavo Diogenes, a defining figure on Fortaleza’s art scene and an important reference point for the younger generation of artists, and Arrudas expand the dialogue with their own painterly and object-based approaches, which explore origins, identity and new beginnings. Diógenes’ works are characterised by a slowed-down sense of time, transforming everyday scenes into images imbued with memory and a sense of alienation. Caio Marcolini’s organic sculptures made of interwoven metal translate natural forms into fragile architectural structures, offering a sculptural counterpoint to the paintings. Organised in collaboration with the Leonardo Leal Gallery, Fortaleza, and with the support of the Vilsmeier-Linhares Collection, Munich, ‘Metamorphoses’ presents four artists to watch out for.
