In his work, the artist Philipp Messner explores complex questions of perception: Where do the boundaries between art and nature lie? How do impressions of artificiality or naturalness arise? How do digital experiences alter the relationship between object, viewer and space? And how does this transformation shape our analogue reality? He arranges his sculptures and works on paper into multi-layered spatial installations, thereby creating surreal-looking landscapes through which exhibition visitors move.
In doing so, he works with a diverse range of materials – shimmering aluminium panels, organically meandering silvery tubes, colour-soaked marble slabs and watercolours. His inspiration also draws on a wide variety of sources, such as Arte Povera, or his native region, the Dolomites. His sculptures emerge from a tension between paradoxical conceptual ideas and respond to the architecture of Villa Stuck.
