With alchemical precision, Steffen Jopp’s works mediate between the earthly and the spiritual, reaching toward an innermost core exposed through form itself. The unfolded interface, no longer fixed as a visor, bends outward into the picture plane as a panel. Folds and creases testify to processes of transformation, allowing steel to settle into undulations reminiscent of parchment. Within the reflective brilliance of an ostensibly flawless surface, closer scrutiny reveals traces of rupture: a frieze of engraved flames seems to eat its way from the margins toward the center, while glossy offset ink meanders across the metal, finding its course from burn marks and weld seams. It expands into a delicate vascular network, spreading through the work like sepsis through a body. Eyes opened wide and mouths cut out into voids confront viewers with their own shadow-like likenesses, as if reflected back in silhouette.
