The exhibition FADED FUTURE at Matti Suuronen’s FUTURO house, located in front of the Pinakothek der Moderne’s main entrance, showcases a captivating selection of 15 photographs by Munich-based photographer Michael Nischke, offering a richly contrasting display that captures the decline of a futuristic holiday park in Taiwan.
The UFO Village – Wanli, Taiwan In the early 1980s, businessman Su Ming (1922 – 2000) built a holiday park in Wanli, in northern Taiwan, featuring buildings that were simple replicas of the famous VENTURO and FUTURO plastic houses designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen. However, just a few years after completion, the first houses were abandoned. The unfavorable location and the harsh weather conditions led to the rapid decline of the complex, gradually transforming the futuristic holiday park into a lost place. Munich-based photographer Michael Nischke has spent several years documenting this decline in a series of striking photographs. It now seems that this chapter is also coming to an end. Large areas of wasteland appeared for the first time in 2026, and it seems as if everything has been completely wiped out. Many buildings have been demolished, as has the once-overgrown vegetation – FADED FUTURE.
